Interview Alexander Ross

“At Black Finch our passion is alchemising your story into a treasured piece of contemporary jewellery.   Honouring the earth’s most precious materials to create a wearable artwork to last a lifetime.”

What drew you to the world of jewellery design?

Being able to make something from start to finish, something about beauty, precious and meaningful.

Can you share with us the inspiration behind your jewellery?

It is really informed by beauty in asymmetry and using natural materials to make unique pieces.

How do you ensure that your designs are unique and stand out?

We have a large stone collection we source ourselves so combining those pieces into a design results in a different outcome. I come from an artist background not constrained by traditional jewellery and an aversion to making pieces that have existed before.

What are some design elements that are unique to the Black Finch aesthetic?

A combination of classical elements, asymmetry and a play of colour is very important.

Can you walk us through your design process, from conception to the finished product?

It depends on the piece, personal experiences, memories, a story, then intuition and the conversation with the client, and being drawn to a resolution or an outcome.

Tell us, which piece of yours is your personal favourite?

Unexpected response that gives you an involuntary response when finished and then we know the piece is singing

When you're not designing jewellery, what do you enjoy doing in your free time?

Looking into gems, Sailing, surfing anything  ocean related…..
